Routine maintenance for reliability.

Most wall mounted fountains need very little maintenance. Just keep them filled with water and give them an occasional wipe or polish to keep them looking their best. However, sometimes wall water fountains need more than just a little bit of filling. Here are some tips to help you maintain and troubleshoot wall mounted fountains in your home and your workplace.

Your fountain's pump is the most important component it has. Never run the pump without water, since it could overheat and be damaged. Check water levels on daily basis to make sure you don't have problems with the fountain running dry. If the fountain is splashing, you may have too much water in the basin - simply removing some will fix this problem. A fountain that overflows when the pump is turned off is also a sign of a basin that's just too full.

Combating Fountain Problems

Algae or mineral scale are common issues in areas that come in contact with water. If you're starting to see them, or your fountain is producing an unpleasant odor, you may need to clean the fountain. Periodic cleaning is an important part of maintaining any wall mounted fountain. Remove collected debris from the fountain and pump once per week, making sure that the pump remains fully submerged for top efficiency. The pump should run consistently to prevent stagnation - water that's continuously flowing will mean that your wall water fountain will require less cleaning.

If the fountain is going to be unused for a period of time, draining it is important. Wall water fountains shouldn't be allowed to hold water if they aren't running. Still water will breed microorganisms and develop an unpleasant smell. It may also cause your fountain to tarnish or discolor, depending on the material your wall mounted fountain is made from. Outdoor fountains may collect dead leaves or grow algae, meaning they need special care. Most outdoor wall mounted fountains are kept dry for two days each month for cleaning.

Troubleshooting Your Pump

If your wall water fountain's pump develops a vibration or hum, you should first make sure it's fully submerged.  If that's not the problem, the next thing to do is make sure the pump's not vibrating against the fountain basin.  If it is, rubber matting or another kind of pad placed between them will fix this problem and restore quiet working.

Fountains that aren't circulating water are another common problem.  Step one is making sure the pump and tubing haven't become separated - this is particularly common in wall mounted fountains that aren't lying flat.  If the tubing has come away from the pump, just reconnect it.  If this isn't the problem, gently tap the pump with a blunt object or tap it on a table top.  This will knock a slightly off-location impeller.  Pumps that don't respond to this treatment will need to be taken apart and cleaned according to manufacturer instructions.  Pumps that have become full of dirt, dust, hair, animal dander or other debris won't work properly and must be cleaned out.  To keep this from happening, just slip the pump into sheer pantyhose or another type of filter - the debris will be caught, and cleaning will be easier.  Wall water fountains that are gurgling should be topped up - the air is getting into the fountain and making noise.
