Maintenance Will Extend Your Fountains Life

Making the choice to put in a stainless steel wall fountain at your office or in your home is a great way to add that extra bit of modern sophistication to your décor, but you have to make sure you are maintaining it properly or it will start to look more like an eyesore than a dramatic visual statement. You cannot just buy a fountain and put it on your wall and be done with it. You need to make sure you are cleaning it properly or it will start to look bad or stop working all together. Fortunately, proper fountain maintenance is easy if you follow a few simple steps and care for your fountain regularly. A steel water fountain should last for many years, and look great that whole time.

There are several different kinds of water fountains you can get, and each requires slightly different care, but the overall ideas are the same. You always want to make sure to notice whether the water smells funny, or spiders have found a new home in it and covered it with cobwebs, etc. That said, if you follow the directions for proper cleaning and fountain maintenance in the instruction booklet that will come with your new fountain, you should be fine. Here are a few tips to get you started however.

Simple Routine Check Ups Keep Your Fountain Running Smoothly

The most important thing when you have a water fountain in your home or office is to keep track of the water level. Each fountain has a different ideal water level, and you should check it often to make sure your own water level does not fall too far below that line. You also of course do not want to fill it too high as this can cause other problems like overloading the pump or submerging part of the unit that should not be under water. Most people have to refill their water fountain about twice a week. It is important not to let it run dry as this can burn out the pump and cause the unit to stop working. Most water fountain companies have a warranty but these usually do not cover the replacement of pumps damaged by letting the water get too low.

Another very important part of fountain maintenance is cleaning your fountain. You want to make sure algae and other organisms do not get a chance to grow in the water, as these can clog up your fountain and stop the water from flowing through properly. This is another danger that may short out your pump as well as make for an unsightly and sluggish fountain. You should clean out the algae at least four times each year, taking the fountain completely apart and cleaning out the pump, any tubing in the unit and the water bowl and surfaces themselves. Anywhere water flows, you should clean. You should also make sure you are using the right kind of water. Many fountains prefer distilled or otherwise low mineral water to prevent buildup and corrosion.
